Companies all around the world have started working remotely due to the wake of COVID-19. While Microsoft Teams is among the world’s most popular chat-based collaboration platforms that improve business communication and productivity, many companies have started migrating from Slack to Teams.

Every day, your employees might share a few other business confidential data on Teams, including business strategies and client data. Third parties could access this confidential and sensitive information if those documents fall into the wrong hands. As a result, many companies and business users have concerns about Microsoft Teams’ security.

Microsoft Teams Security Features

In contrast to Slack, Microsoft provides several authentication procedures, making it more difficult for unauthorized users to acquire access. Microsoft Teams provides the following to protect its users from online threats:

1. Authentication

Wide-ranging authentication protocols provided by Microsoft Teams make it more challenging for external and unauthorized users to acquire access. These options include single-sign-on with Microsoft’s Active Directory or enterprise-wide two-factor authentication.

2. Encryption

Microsoft Teams encrypts user data both in transit and at rest, even though it does not yet offer end-to-end encryption. Microsoft manages most of these operations using Active Directory, allowing IT departments more control over security. Some Office 365 applications, like SharePoint and OneNote, have their encryption standards as an additional layer of security.

3. Compliance

Microsoft Teams complies with all Office 365 Tier-C requirements, including SOC 1, SOC 2, and HIPAA. Regarding SOC 2, Microsoft says, “SOC 2 is an auditing procedure that securely manages your data to protect the interests of your organization and the privacy of its clients. ISO 27001 is a security standard that is intended to bring information security under explicit management control. It is one of the most widely recognized certifications for a cloud service. And today, we are proud to join the family of Microsoft cloud services in scope for SOC 2/ISO/IEC 27001.”

4. Protocols

Microsoft Teams security protocols consist of:

264 for video

OPUS for meetings

SILK for peer-to-peer and voice calls

MNP24 for signaling

ICE to set up media

VBSS for desktop sharing

5. Reporting and Auditing

Microsoft Teams supports audit log searches within the Office 365 Security and Compliance Center. System administrators can identify potential risks early on using this feature.
